KC Mathews Chief Market Strategist
Long-time investment industry veteran to hold key contributing role in firm’s market strategy with a focus on equity investments
Kansas City, Mo. – August 10, 2023 – KC Mathews, CFA®, has joined Commerce Trust, a division of Commerce Bank, as Chief Market Strategist. In this role, he will serve on the firm’s Investment Policy Committee and play a key contributing role in the development and execution of Commerce Trust’s market strategy with a focus on equity investments. In addition, KC will also serve on Commerce Trust’s thought leadership team to articulate the firm’s views on investment and market activity in media interviews and public speaking events.
With close to 30 years of diverse experience in the investment management industry, KC comes to Commerce Trust after 21 years at UMB Bank, where he most recently served as Chief Investment Officer, a position he held for 13 years. In this capacity, KC oversaw the strategic development and execution of UMB’s $12 billion Investment Management division. He also counseled high profile private and institutional clients on investment management matters. Prior to joining UMB, KC held positions of increased responsibility within the trust division of the Bank of Oklahoma.

KC holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Minnesota and a master’s in business administration from the University of Notre Dame. He is a graduate of the ABA National Trust School at Northwestern University and completed an advanced investment management education program at the Harvard Business School.
He has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and is member of the CFA Institute. He also is a past president of the CFA® Society of Kansas City.
KC is a former board member of Junior Achievement and Operation Breakthrough. In addition, he served on the faculty of the Schools of Banking, a regional cooperative effort jointly sponsored by the Kansas and Nebraska Bankers Associations, teaching courses in the Trust and Financial Services curriculum.
